DR. F. A. GUTSHALL.

From our Blain correspondent.

This community was shocked on Monday morning when the news spread that Dr. Frank A. Gutshall had passed away suddenly during the night previous. He had been growing feeble, due to advanced age, for some years past, but was going about as usual up until the final summons came. Sunday afternoon towards evening, he had a sinking spell and from the effects of two heart attacks, between midnight and three oclock (sic), he succumbed. He evidently slept away without apparent suffering.

Doctor Gutshall was well known in this district and is reputed to be one of the oldest practicing physicians in Perry county (sic). He set up his office in New Germantown soon after his graduation from college and was there for fifteen years and then moved to Blain, in the year 1881, where he has practiced for forty years. He enjoyed a successful and lucrative practice. Although Doctor Gutshall had, in a manner retired several years since from the activities of his profession, yet he did an office practice for those who called on him and would variously be taken to visit patients and was frequently called upon to participate in consultations.

Back in the days when he drove the horse, Mr. Gutshall was busy. Many the rough and cold nights he ventured out to relieve the sick and suffering. His services were sought over a large territory. The Doctor in his younger days enjoyed the sports of hunting and fishing.

Dr. Frank A. Gutshall was a son of the late John and Catharine (Wunderlich) Gutshall and was born at Carlisle, Cumberland county (sic), on March 15, 1844. His grandfather, Peter Gutshall, was of German descent and was born at Harrisburg in 1790. His father, John Gutshall, was a carpenter of some note at Carlisle and by perserverance (sic) became an architect and was prominent in his chosen profession throughout the eastern counties of Pennsylvania. Doctor Gutshall was aged 78 years, 11 months and 4 days at the time of his death. The deceased is survived by one half-brother, James Gutshall, of Carlisle, and by a half-sister. Mrs. James M. Moose, of Andersonburg.

Frank A. Gutshall received his education in the public schools at Carlisle and graduated from the High school in the year 1862. The same year he enlisted in the Civil War in Co. A., 113th (sic) Penna. Vols., under Captain Wm. F. Porter. While in the army, about one year after his enlistment, he was stricken with an attack of typhoid fever, and was discharged on Feb. 20, 1863, as disabled. He returned to his home at Carlisle and began to read medicine with Dr. J. J. Zitzer, of Carlisle. Shortly afterward he entered the medical department of the University of Pennsylvania, at Philadelphia, from which institution he graduated in March, 1866.

Frank A. Gutshall, M. D., during his long years of service for humanity, became prominent in professional circles. He was a membr (sic) of the County Medical Association and the State Medical Society. He was a medical examiner for several Life Insurance Companies, during his practice. He served in borough offices and was a member of the board of directors of the Bank of Blain.

Doctor Gutshall was interested in the welfare of the community and financially supported its advancement. He improved his property in recent years and enjoyed the comforts of a modern home.

He was liberal in his support to church denominations when called upon. Doctor Gutshall was like his father, a firm believer in the principles of the Democratic party. While the Samuel Baker Post, No. 543, G. A. R., was in existence, he was a member.

Dr. F. A. Gutshall was married on June 1, 1867, to Miss Mary E. Swartz, who was a daughter of Levi and Margaret (Kunkle) Swartz. Two children were born by their union, namely, John Charles Gutshall, of Blain, and Daisy V., wife of N. K. Bistline, of Blain. The deceased is survived by his wife and two children. There are five grandchildren.

The funeral will be held on Thursday afternoon from the home in this place. Services will be conducted at the house at 2 o'clock by the Rev. Charles H. Steerman, Church of the Brethren minister, of which denomination Mrs. Gutshall is a member. Those who will act as pallbearers are : W. H. Sheaffer, W. L. Smith, R. M. Smith, C. II. Wentzel, D. C. Dromgold and C. R. Hench. Interment will he made in the new Blain cemetery (sic). The son of John & Catharine (Wunderlich) Gutshall, in 1860 he was a student presumably living in Carlisle, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, although he is not found in that census. He stood 5' 6" tall and had dark hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Carlisle August 5, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 11 as a private with Co. A, 130th Pennsylvania Infantry. (Several obituaries erroneously claim he served with the 113th Pennsylvania Infantry, a regiment that did not exist.) Hospitalized for illness on or near the battlefield at Antietam, he was discharged by surgeon's certificate March 27, 1863, for "laryngitis causing loss of voice and general debility following typhoid fever." His compiled military service records say he was discharged February 17, 1863, but the muster-out roll date is shown here. He is on the rolls as "Francis A. Gutshall."

An 1866 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania medical school, he married Mary E. Swartz June 1, 1867, in Toboyne Township, Perry County, and fathered John Charles (b. 11/15/67) and Daisy Viola 05/22/72 - married Newton Kurtz Bistline). He suffered with a long term bronchial condition and diseased rectum dating from his days in the army. From June 1866 until November 1881, he lived in New Germantown, Perry County, then moved to Blain, Perry County, where he died from "angina pectoris." He sometimes signed his first name "Francis" and for some reason is listed in the 1900 census as Thomas H. Gutshall. It seems that he rarely used his first name.
