Carl William "Bill" Swallender was a 1961 US World Team Professional. He was a member of the Twin City Figure Skating Club. He won jr. men's title at the 1933 Nationals. In 1937 he married childhood skating friend, Genevieve Nelson. He coached in Baltimore, at the Broadmoor and at the Chicago Figure Skating Club. He and his wife had two sons, Bill and Erik. He was the first coach at the
Kansas City Skating Club. His student, Douglas "Doug" Ramsey (1944-1961) finished fourth at the 1961 US Nationals and was not invited to Prague. When bronze medalist Tim Brown dropped out due to heart trouble, Ramsay and Swallender were given tickets aboard Sabena Flight 548. The plane crashed on Feb. 15, 1961
