Sandra Dawn Grainger Shaver, 68, of Aynor, died on November 7 at Kingston Nursing Center in the company of her family. She was born on January 19, 1944 in Mullins. She is predeceased by her parents, Grover Cleveland and Ruby Isla Mishoe Grainger of Galivants Ferry; her husband, Charles Junior Shaver; and her brother, Grover Cleveland Grainger, Jr. She is survived by her son, Charles Rhett Shaver, his wife, Hana, and their daughter, Saya; her sister, Era Lee Grainger Williamson and her children, Chet (Hana) Williamson; Sheila (Phillip) Hendrick; Teal (Jim) Harding; Leah Williamson; four great nephews and one great-niece; her sister-in-law, Sharon Walters Grainger and her children, Janine Kia, Kent Grainger, Seth Grainger, and Eric Grainger and their children. She kept close to her heart, her special friend, Robert Lytton, and her caregiver, Clara Young, who nursed and nurtured Sandra in her last and most difficult year. Sandra retired as the principal of Aynor Middle School with 35 years of experience as a teacher and administrator. She graduated from Aynor High School and then Coker College and worked as a chemist before beginning her career in education. She taught in private and public schools in Auburn, Alabama, Lake City, Conway, and Aynor where she returned to her alma mater to teacher physics and physical science. She completed advanced degrees in educational administration at the University of South Carolina and became the assistant principal at Aynor High School and then the first principal of Aynor Middle School. She was a lifetime member of Antioch Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school and Bible study classes and began the church's library. She was the first female to be inducted into the Aynor Lion's Club and served as the club's president. Sandra was diagnosed with cancer more than eight years ago and fought valiantly through multiple surgeries, doctors, chemotherapy regimes, and radiation. Through God's grace, she defied all medical logic, defeated death three times, and lived five years longer than expected. During this time, she continued to serve others and share the love and faith of her Lord, Jesus Christ, adding meaning and purpose to each day. The family will receive friends at Johnson Funeral Home of Aynor on Friday, November 9, from 5-7 p.m. Services will be held at Antioch Baptist Church on Saturday, November 10, 2012 at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
