Add PhotosSt Patrick's Church is a large Roman Catholic parish church in Soho Square, London, that features extensive catacombs . St Pat's was consecrated as a chapel in a building behind Carlisle House on 29 September 1792, one of the first Catholic buildings allowed in Great Britain after the Reformation.
Roman Catholic Church. 1891-93 by John Kelly of Kelly and Birchall in Renaissance style replacing a reused late 18th century building adapted for Catholic worship since 1802. Construction in dark red brick of small gauge with rubbed brick detail. Italianate with early Renaissance simplified detail. Comprises west campanile tower, vestibule, antechapel, aisled nave, apsidal sanctuary and south chapel.
West tower as campanile 125 feet high over principal entrance, with small stone Corinthian pedimented and columned porch, with inscription "UT CHRISTIANI ITA ET ROMANI SITIS" on narrow former house plot frontage to the Square; the tower has four pilastered stages with arcaded openings, and deep bracketed eaves cornice to pyramidal roof. Second stage has statue of St Francis in arched alcove.
St Patrick's was built on the site of Carlisle House, a mansion bought by Casanova's mistress Teresa Cornelys, who went bankrupt running a music hall and allegedly a brothel there. A former bordello and music hall owned by one of Casanova's mistresses is perhaps an unlikely site for one of Britain's oldest Roman Catholic churches.
It is rumoured that the catacombs under the church extend out some distance across the square.
This is the church where singer Tommy Steele married former Windmill dancer and singer Ann Donoghue on 19th June 1960, where more than 2000 fans showed up and a strong police presence kept them under control.
