Prim's Grove Mole Hill Methodist Cemetery
Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, USA
The name Mole Hill, according to local legend as relayed by brothers William Sidney and Leonard Lafayette Nixon, came about due to an argument. There was to be some event, the exact nature of which is now lost to us. During the planning of this event, there was a discussion as to just where it should be held, whether at Prim's Grove or some other competing venue that was in the running. Apparently, the discussions became heated. Ultimately, at one point in the negotiations, a rather indignant member from the opposing side, faced with the possibility of having it at Prim's, is said to have witheringly exclaimed, "Having it up there would be just like having it in a mole hill." The image, and the name stuck, and the rest, as they say, is history.
Kerr's association with the church was short-lived (possibly due to his age); by 1890 the congregation voted to attach itself with the Congregational Church, and by 1895, it had become a mission of Williams Memorial Presbyterian Church, located several miles away on Beatties Ford Road. After 1900, it looks to have ceased as a congregation altogether.
According to local tradition, there were three burials in the Mole Hill cemetery. One was an infant, a child of John W Auten and wife Harriet Rebecca Prim (Prim was a daughter of James and Margaret Prim). The second burial was the arm of a child named Frank Raborn. Frank had been injured by a falling tree, and his arm had been amputated and buried near by the family home. The third burial was that of Miss Cynthia Cox, a spinster, who lived with her nephew nearby on the road later called Simpson Road.
