The area is very little advertised and little known, even to some of the staff who work at the fortress. However, if you follow the correct turning (at N59° 06.813 E11° 24.017) and go straight where the GPSr points, you will find it easily in 5 to 10 minutes from the main road, on foot. The first few hundred meters go through a residential area and then you reach a red boom. Straight on (along an old cart road) over a new road and then to the right brings you to a memorial stone in a small clearing.
This was a burial place for slaves from the fortress. At the highest there were about 250 slaves, from 1835 to 1845. Slavery in Norway was stopped by royal decree on 30. sept 1845, hence the marking on the monument refers to the period 1779-1845. After 1845 all prisoners were transferred to Akershus. The history of slavery is older but not well known: there is a reference in 1716 to it being a continuing situation at Fredriksten. Records were destroyed in the fire of 1826 making the details obscure.
