This was the first cemetery of the Lutheran Twelve-Apostles-Parish, and opened in 1864. It has a size of 31400 square meters, or 7.75 acres.
Many famous inhabitants of Berlin are buried here, some of the have Honorary Graves of the city of Berlin, which means they have a perpetual period of repose. Other graves are normally flattened and re-used, unless the family of the deceased purchases another period of repose. This cemetery's plot life is 20 years.
Also see Neuer Zwölf-Apostel-Kirchhof.
Please note that the graves in Germany are not perpetual. After a certain period of repose (20-30 years) the graves are being leveled and re-used. There is no toxic embalming being done in Germany, so the coffin and the corpse have decomposed naturally. If the family of the deceased decides to purchase another period the duration can be extended by another 30 years.
War Graves are considered memorials and are kept up by the owner of the cemetery. Those are kept forever.
