Between 1907 & 1913 William Blyth Gerish, the Hertfordshire antiquarian, organised the recording of monumental inscriptions in the churchyards and burial grounds of Hertfordshire. Those at St Botolph's were transcribed by William Frampton Andrews in 1908.
In the 1960s, the then Rector of Shenley, Rev. Norman E. S. Johnson, ‘improved the churchyard' by removing headstones, footstones, kerbs and iron railings, etc. Before the clearance went ahead, a list of names from the memorials in sections B & C was compiled and their positions marked on a plan of the churchyard.
After becoming redundant in 1972, the church was converted into a private residence in 1981. Both Graham Hill and Nicholas Hawksmoor are buried in the private area of the churchyard. The churchyard was extended south-east in 1882 and again in 1936 and contains nineteen war graves.
