John S. "Pop" DeRiggi Sr., 81, of Levittown, died Saturday. His wife, the former Caroline "Kay" Blasi, preceded him in death. He was born and raised in Scranton, and lived here until he moved to Levittown in 1955. Surviving are a daughter, Carol Gouldey, Doylestown; two sons, Larry Krusen, Doylestown, and John S. DeRiggi, Jr. and wife, Bev, Levittown; two brothers and two sisters, including Ann Chio Chio, Scranton; six grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and great-grandchildren. A graveside ceremony will be held Thursday at noon in the chapel at Cathedral Cemetery, 1701 Oram St., where friends may call from 11:30 a.m. until time of service.

John S. DeRiggi Sr. was a World War II veteran who served in E Company, 32nd Armored Regiment, 3rd Armored Division. He was the Assistant Gunner of the T26E3 Pershing tank crew that was immortalized in a tank duel at the cathedral in Cologne, Germany which was caught on film by an Army Signal Corps photographer. His crew has more recently been featured in the best selling book "Spearhead" written by Adam Makos.
