*Because of his love of flying, right after graduating from high school, Bud enrolled in the Royal Canadian Air Force. Having completed his pilot training, he was a flight instructor before serving in England with 402 Squadron and flying 'Typhoon', 'Hurricane' and 'Spitfire' aircraft; 402 Squadron earned many distinguished battle honours over the course of the Second World War: Defence of Britain 1941-44, Fortress Europe 1941-44, English Channel and North Sea 1941-45, Arnheim Rhine Dieppe France and Germany 1944-45, and Normandy 1944.
*Following the war, Bud remained in the RCAF, working at Central Headquarters before being assigned to 444 Squadron at the newly established Canadian No. 4 (Fighter) Wing at Baden-Soellingen, Germany, where he flew the F-86 'Sabre' aircraft.
*From 1958-60, he served as an Air Advisor and officer with the Canadian Delegation of the International Control Commission, responsible for ensuring the implementation of the Geneva Agreement in North and South Vietnam.
*In Jan 1960 he was stationed in Gimli, Manitoba and, while there, Bud met, and then married, Moira (Coghlan) Mawson, also becoming father to her four young children. In 1962 Bud and Moira welcomed a fifth child to their family.
*In 1964 Bud was again posted to 4 (F) Wing, in Baden, returning there with his new family; he became Wing Commander of 421 Squadron (relocated to 4 Wing from 'stood down' 2 (F) Wing in France), this time flying the CF-104 'Starfighter' aircraft.
*After retiring from the RCAF in 1969, he worked with the Civil Aviation Branch in the Department of Transport in Ottawa; he retired from there in 1983, but continued to lead a rich and fulfilled life with his family and friends.
*Bud was predeceased by his wife, Moira and three children, Michael, Maureen and Kathleen; he is survived by two daughters and two grand-daughters.
