LANCE SERGEANT HERBERT GLANISTER,
4615991, 7th Battalion, Duke of Wellington’s (West Riding Regiment).
Herbert was born in Mossley in 1919;
he was the son of George Henry and Susannah Elizabeth (nee Marshall).
As a boy Herbert attended St John’s School, Roughtown.
Herbert was employed at Messrs R H Buckley and Sons Ltd, Woodend Mills, Mossley.
He became a member of the Yorkshire War Conservative Club.
Herbert enlisted in 1939.
At the end of November 1944
the 1/7th Battalion was stationed at the Nijmegen bridgehead and around Haalderen.
Just after midnight of 1st December 1944
the Battalion was being hit by heavy artillery, mortar and Spandau fire.
As the night progressed they came under attack from multiple infantry elements
of the 6th German Parachute Division in an attempt to capture the Nijmegen bridge.
Herbert, age 25, was killed on 1st December 1944.
He is buried in Jonkerbos War Cemetery, Netherlands.
His memorial inscription reads
“Never Shall Your Memory Fade, Sweet Thoughts Ever Linger Where You Are Laid”.
Herbert was a member of a Mossley family who for five generations had fought in wars.
He is commemorated on the St George’s Church War Memorial, Mossley,
and the Yorkshire Ward Conservative Club Roll of Honour, Mossley.
